The University of Iowa Piano Pedagogy Program has a long and distinguished tradition and reputation. From the time that the UI was one of the first programs in the country to grant a Doctorate in Musical Arts, Iowa has always been at the forefront of research and innovation.
Since my arrival at Iowa in 2003, all of my graduates have won academic positions in the field of piano pedagogy. Rigorous coursework, hands-on teaching experience, as well as demanding solo and chamber music performances prepare our graduate students both in depth and breadth for their future in academia.
The Piano Pedagogy program at Iowa has gained national and international attention through the groundbreaking UI PianoPed Video Recording Project. Pianist Jason Sifford and I are in the process of video recording basically the complete beginner to intermediate piano repertoire and making it available for everyone, free of charge, at YouTube. This will allow students, parents, and teachers to view high level performances of this repertoire. There are currently over 3000 videos on the site, with more than 6000 yet to come.
The most recent development in the pedagogy program is the creation of the UIPianoPed Wiki site. Devised as a companion site to the YouTube project, the reader will here find a pedagogical description of each recorded piece, as well as composer and publisher information. Due to the Wiki concept, it is designed to be interactive by allowing readers to comment on and add their knowledge of the repertoire to the discussion.
The University of Iowa Pre-College Piano Conservatory is steadily growing. It offers our graduate students first-hand experience in teaching piano to children, both individually and in group settings. For further information on the program, please click here.
The near future will bring further exciting developments for our program. Back in 2008 The University of Iowa experienced a devastating flood, which completely destroyed the School of Music. In the fall 2016 semester will be finally be moving into our new state-of-the-art facility! And with it, we will be moving into a brand new group piano lab, and a specifically designated piano pedagogy library.
